Kitty Kaburo

In partnership with Tin-Aw Gallery
May — June 2019

Kitty Kaburo (b. 1987) is a Filipino artist of Korean descent. She works with various traditional and unconventional media, incorporating each of their peculiar properties to simulate the transformation and effects of time, the elements, and human activity on landscapes. Kitty Kaburo graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Fine Arts in 2015, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Thesis award. She was also one of the shortlisted artists for the Ateneo Art Awards in 2017.

“I have found an increased interest in History after the 2 month residency at ABungalow and its proximity to the historic Balay ni Tana Dicang. The great care and effort put into the preservation, and perseverance of natural resources and historic artifacts, as well as joy in the present and the possibilities of the future have informed a multi-layered approach to painting as well as life in general.”

Kitty Kaburo opens her residency exhibition Kung Ano Sa Babaw, Amo Man Sa Dalum (As Below, So Above) at the Kapitana Gallery in Balay ni Tana Dicang in Talisay City, Negros Occidental on May 31, Friday, at 6pm.

This is the culmination of Kaburo’s two-month exploration of Negros Island for the artist residency program of ABungalow Residency Project in partnership with Tin-aw Art Management Inc.

The oil on painting artworks present flora and fauna around Talisay, Silay, and Bacolod. Kaburo depicts the landscape and architecture of Negros reflecting on the challenges and changes across time. These latest works continue her concern with the balancing of impermanence and memory.

This is the 3rd year of the ABungalow residency project. ABungalow and Kapitana Gallery invite artists from around the Philippines to stay in Negros, explore the island, and develop an exhibition about the place and its people at the end of the residency.
